… launched a push to return food stamps to New Yorkers. The city is helping 26,500 people access benefits that were pulled by the Trump administration.

… started building a waterfront park promised two decades ago. The city is turning a parking lot into a 2.5-acre park.

… unveiled a strategy to combat antisemitism. The plan increases funding for hate crime prevention and synagogue security.

… opened a storefront for public service jobs. The Jobs NYC Center helps New Yorkers land city jobs.

… doubled city grants for artists. Artists can now get up to $10,000 in funding.

And other news: According to new federal data, New York posted the fastest economic growth of any U.S. state in Q2, nearly double the national rate. New York City produces about 60% of the state’s economy.

Explained: The NYC Rent Freeze

What is it?

From October 2026 through September 2027, landlords can't raise rents on one- or two-year leases in rent-stabilized homes.

Who is it for?

The ~2.4 million New Yorkers who live in the city’s ~1 million rent-stabilized homes — the last of New York’s last affordable housing, mostly home to working-class tenants. The freeze does not apply to market-rate private homes.

Who made it happen?

NYS Tenant Bloc organized tenants and packed Rent Guidelines Board hearings to testify, alongside the Housing Justice for All coalition. The Board, which decides each year how much rents rise in stabilized homes, then voted for a 0% increase. Mayor Mamdani appointed most of the Board members.

What’s the context?

Stabilized rent surged under ex-mayor Eric Adams, deepening the city’s affordability crisis. This intends to meet that moment — with New York’s first-ever freeze on both one- and two-year leases.

Fair criticism

The NYPD arrested dozens of people for protesting Benjamin Netanyahu, including several of Mayor Mamdani's elected allies. Writing for Prism, Alexandra Martinez contrasts the arrests with Mamdani's campaign pledge to arrest Netanyahu.

A judge forced the city to restart the rollout of its pied-à-terre tax on luxury second homes. Habitat Magazine calls the rollout botched, but notes the tax still has the backing of most New Yorkers, even as billionaires sue to kill it.

Since September 20, the Mamdani administration:

… welcomed the world to New York City. The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly high-level week took place in NYC — with Mayor Mamdani playing both host and diplomat. Here are some of the global leaders the mayor built ties with.

… won the largest worker settlement in New York City history. The city forced DoorDash to pay $131 million for exploiting delivery workers — $115 million directly to workers and $16 million in civil penalties. The payout benefits thousands of workers who were underpaid, paid late, or not paid at all by DoorDash.

… hosted President Trump at Gracie Mansion. Mamdani pressed Trump on protected status for Haitian New Yorkers and federal support for a prospective affordable housing project. In a subsequent press conference with the president, Mamdani invited questions from journalists who Trump had banned from the White House.

… planted an olive tree with Palestinian families from Gaza. Mamdani hosted a dinner at his home, Gracie Mansion, for Palestinian New Yorkers who have lost family in Gaza, along with refugees forced from their homes.

… announced a new housing complex with 1,000 rent-stabilized homes. The Gold Street complex in Lower Manhattan will have 4,000 new homes, one-quarter of which are rent-stabilized — part of the administration’s plan to build 200,000 homes over the next decade.

… launched free opera tickets for 70,000 New Yorkers. Thanks to a partnership between the Mayor’s Office and the Metropolitan Opera — “Opera for All” — 10,000 free tickets will be released each month for seven months.

… opened the Bronx’s first busway. The busway on Tremont Avenue will speed up trips for 39,000 daily riders. It opened just two months after it was announced.

… announced that the city has planted over 18,000 trees in the past year. The figure is for the fiscal year, so also includes the end of the Adams administration. It’s the most trees planted in a single fiscal year for a decade.

… closed the Urban 20 Mayors Summit (U20) with a global call for city power:

Smear of the Week

The smear: At the UN, war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu called Mamdani “the antisemitic mayor of New York” and claimed the mayor is “buddies” with Hamas.

The facts: Mayor Mamdani has raised hate-crime prevention funding to $26 million a year and recently stepped up NYPD protection at synagogues and Jewish sites across the city. He has also described Hamas as a “terrorist organization”.

Bonus fact: A recent Associated Press poll found 44% of American Jews view Mayor Mamdani favorably, compared with 32% for Netanyahu.

But do you condemn Hasan Piker? Netanyahu’s UN speech also attacked Mamdani for meeting with Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, the latest escalation of a tactic pioneered last year by failed mayoral candidate and sex-offending ex-governor Andrew Cuomo: attempting to discredit opponents through their ties to Piker. Amplified by prominent conservatives and now the world’s leading war criminal, those attacks have only elevated Piker as a political player.

Mamdani used Gracie Mansion to win Trump over. Hell Gate argues that the mayor tried to secure fresh commitments from the president using something Trump clearly loves but can't have: the mayor's official residence. Trump told reporters the house "feels like a home" and said he hoped Mamdani would be "a great one."

Since September 13, the Mamdani administration:

… sued the Trump administration over its “public charge” policy. The new federal rule means people who receive public benefits, like Medicaid, can be denied legal immigration status. The city sued, arguing it will push people away from healthcare and toward preventable deaths. Over one million New Yorkers are not U.S. citizens.

… hit 200,000 potholes filled in 2026. NYC DOT is filling around 3,000 potholes each week — 27% more than last year. The repairs have become a symbol of Mayor Mamdani’s approach to governance, which he calls pothole politics.

… launched 17 new public bathrooms. Free, accessible modular restrooms are opening at parks and high-traffic areas. They are ADA-accessible and climate-controlled, but access requires a phone (see Fair Criticism below).

… raised pay for emergency snow shovelers. From this winter, snow shovelers will earn a starting pay of $30/hour, up from $19.14. Early registration is now open.

… installed NYC's first green-roof bus shelter. It’s one of four new shelters in Brownsville, featuring plants and wildflowers that cool the bus stops.

… released a plan to tackle traffic deaths. The 10-year plan has 100+ policies, from expanding slow zones to improving intersections — but the plan falls short on a key Mamdani campaign pledge (see Fair Criticism below).

… hosted the Urban 20 Mayors Summit. 25 mayors from the world's largest economies have gathered in NYC to develop a shared agenda on addressing housing, energy costs, and climate change impacts.

Smear of the Week

The smear: “Hundreds of Jewish students” gathered “to protest antisemitism” outside Mayor Mamdani’s home (CBS News, among others)

The reality: Hundreds of children were required to attend a pro-Israel protest outside Mayor Mamdani’s home. Leaked school emails reveal that kids, including dozens of 13-year-olds, were instructed to “show up proudly … as Zionists” at Gracie Mansion — and could only opt out from the protest with permission from their parents. One parent called the tactic "pretty gross."

Fair Criticism

The new public bathrooms may not serve the people who need them most. VOCAL-NY and the Free to Pee Coalition, raised concerns that many unhoused New Yorkers lack smartphones or tap cards to enter the modular units. The coalition noted that "modular bathrooms alone will not change the current imbalance in bathroom access" and is pushing the city to implement a strategic plan to double restroom access.

The new street safety plan breaks Mamdani’s “daylighting” pledge. On the campaign train, Mamdani vowed to ban corner parking, but his new plan waters down that commitment. Street safety advocates called the new commitment "a whole lot of nothing" that prioritizes parking over pedestrian safety, per Streetsblog.

Since September 6, the Mamdani administration:

… opened the city’s 9/11 records. Ahead of the 25th anniversary, the administration published 170,000 pages on the city’s response — revealing the details of a devastating coverup of health hazards by the Giuliani administration. Watch a clip of the City Hall announcement, featuring Jon Stewart.

… created the country's first Office of Worker Power. Mayor Mamdani signed an executive order establishing an office to convene workers and inform city policy. See all of Mayor Mamdani’s 24 executive orders.

… launched free childcare for two-year-olds. More than 2,000 toddlers started the city's inaugural 2-K class — free, full-day care, with no income or immigration requirements. The program is due to reach 12,000 children next September.

… opened a free childcare center for city workers. The Little Apple gives free, year-round care for 40 kids — it’s the first free center the city has run for its own workforce.

… made school streets safer. As of last week, the Mamdani administration has installed 15 MPH zones outside over 200 schools, with 600 more due this year.

… replaced lead pipes for free. More than 900 homeowners have had lead service lines swapped for copper at no cost, saving each over $10,000. State and federal money expands the program over the next year.

… opened a new school built entirely with union labor. The John Dewey School in Brooklyn is one of 10 sites opening this year, adding over 4,600 seats citywide.

And in other news: Two brothers admitted to bribing Eric Ulrich, building commissioner under ex-mayor Eric Adams. Ulrich’s trial begins this month. At least 16 Adams administration officials have been investigated, charged, convicted, or imprisoned for alleged offenses ranging from corruption to sexual assault.

Smear of the Week

The smear: Mayor Mamdani and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez “laughed at Ground Zero while 9/11 families wept”, according to right-wing outlets and Senator Ted Cruz, the president's most wretched simp.

The reality: Michael Ragusa — a critic of Mamdani, and former aide to Rudy Giuliani — stood beside the pair for two hours and says they were respectful throughout.

“The videos of [Mamdani and AOC] laughing are not true. I was standing next to them the whole time. The camera just caught her greeting him hello. Multiple other politicians were laughing and joking behind me. Republicans and Democrats.”

And in other news: President Trump appeared to fall asleep during the 25th-anniversary 9/11 remembrance ceremony in Washington, D.C.

Fair Criticism

A third person died at Canal and Bowery. A day after the city touted its school slow zones, a truck driver jumped the curb at the Chinatown intersection, killing a man and injuring two women — the third death there in just over a year. The redesign Adams promised in 2025 is now Mamdani's to build, and it still hasn't happened.

Demand for 2-K was triple the supply. 5,700 families applied for 2,000 places — and that was in just five school districts. Advocates count roughly 60,000 two-year-olds citywide, so even next year's 12,000 seats leave most families paying.

Since August 30, the Mamdani administration:

… fixed “Crashland”, an infamous street hazard in Downtown Brooklyn. The small but dangerous bike lane gap was created by Eric Adams’ administration to appease a real estate developer. Watch a 1-minute video explainer.

… published a plan to combat racial injustice: the NYC Racial Equity Plan. The framework includes goals to cut Black maternal mortality, shrink the jail population, and close disparities in public transit access.

… recorded the safest summer ever. The city had fewer shootings, shooting victims, and murders from June through August than in any previous year. Murders are down over 24% year to date, with the sharpest declines in the Bronx.

… approved year-round outdoor dining. Mayor Mamdani signed a Council bill into law, ending the costly Adams-era requirement that businesses tear down their outdoor dining setups every winter.

… signed two new executive orders. Mayor Mamdani said, “‘Never Forget’ is not a slogan. It is a commitment that we must carry forward through action” as he established a Day of Remembrance and Service for 9/11, and a new group to strengthen emergency preparedness. … demanded the release of counterterrorism funding. Mayor Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul urged the Trump administration to release security grant money owed to the city, warning that the delay leaves the NYPD and state security agencies short on resources for protecting New Yorkers.

… announced a school AI moratorium. Mayor Mamdani announced a one-year pause on student-facing generative AI for kids through eighth grade, around 600,000 students. Companion chatbots are banned in all grades and high schoolers get supervised pilot programs and AI literacy lessons.

… launched a major street redesign. The city says its comprehensive infrastructure project on Manhattan’s 116th Street will deliver 2.5 miles of bus lanes, protected bike lanes, and 35,000 square feet of pedestrian space.

Smear of the Week

The smear: The New York Post claimed the Mamdani administration is using taxpayer money to fund a “200-strong influencer army,” while illegally communicating with them through the encrypted messaging app Signal.

Where it gets worse: City Hall disputed the reporting, so the Post turned on Emilia Rowland, Mamdani’s new media director, with personal insults and false claims about her family. Rowland responded with a thread dismantling the paper’s lies.

The reality: The administration shares updates in a Signal group with social media creators — some of whom are supportive of the mayor, none of whom are paid for their coverage.

Signal use doesn’t break the city’s record retention laws, and the app’s feature of auto-deleting messages now exists on nearly every chat platform. Deleting messages can be a violation, and City Hall said it took corrective action after an isolated incident of a staffer doing so.

The taxpayer money claim is false too. Creators are spending their own resources to amplify the administration's progress, not to chase a paycheck — they believe in the city's leadership and the movement behind it. But principle is a motive that New York Post “journalists” may struggle to grasp.

Strip out the false claims and there’s no story left — which is why the Post went after the person who pointed that out.

Fair Criticism

Childcare providers went unpaid. Many owners of early childhood centers said they were forced to take out personal loans, or dip into savings, because city funding they were owed never arrived. Mayor Mamdani called the delays unacceptable and pledged $43 million to fix procurement — but some providers had already been carrying the cost for weeks.

The AI moratorium may not go far enough. Fairplay and the AI Moratorium for NYC Schools coalition — parents and educators who spent a year campaigning for the pause — called Mamdani’s moratorium a step in the right direction, but said it carries too many exceptions, runs too short, and skips racial bias and environmental impacts. They want a two-year pause.

What happened in NYC last week?

Justice fast-tracked for suffering tenants — Mayor Mamdani is speeding up housing court for building owners with egregious violations, like those with no heat, hot water, gas, or electricity, or where all elevators are broken. In the most serious cases, a judge will be assigned the same day the case is filed, and landlords must appear in court within five days of being served. Even if they don’t show up, the court can order the repairs at the landlord’s expense.

Renew Crew to rapidly fix playgrounds — The city has convened a team of painters, electricians and plumbers to take on swift repair projects at parks, playgrounds, recreation centers, and sports courts around the city. At the launch, eight-year-old Maxime said, “I recorded a video asking Mayor Mamdani to help get the playground at McKinley Park fixed. It had been closed for almost two years. But guess what? A couple of weeks later, it was fixed!”

Five hit-and-run deaths in two weeks — A nurse walking home from an overnight shift was killed in a Sunset Park crosswalk yesterday, the fifth New Yorker killed by a hit-and-run driver in a fortnight. Days earlier, street safety campaigners held a die-in outside City Hall, demanding that Mamdani take urgent action on traffic safety for cyclists and pedestrian.

The BQE gets a $4 billion rebuild — In 2030, the city will launch a ten-year project to repair a crumbling stretch of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Most of the highway is state-controlled, but the worn and heavily trafficked section beneath the Brooklyn Heights Promenade belongs to the city. The city is declining federal funding to keep control of the design – and, it says, to avoid pressure to widen it.

Queens medians will become stormwater sponges — With support from the state government, New York City will turn concrete medians into planted green infrastructure. The new infrastructure in Queens is expected to capture five million gallons of stormwater a year, preventing flooding.

Mamdani's BQE Plan Doubles Down on the Failures of the Past — Kevin Duggan of Streetsblog explores why transport advocates wanted the highway phased out rather than rebuilt, and what the plan means for the neighborhoods beneath it:

“The decision to continue to keep car traffic flowing through the heart of the city flies in the face of Mamdani’s pledge to speed up bus trips, one prominent advocate and supporter of the mayor’s transit agenda said.”

What happened in NYC last week?

Note: Mayor Mamdani spent the week on vacation upstate, with First Deputy Mayor Dean Fuleihan running City Hall from Aug. 16 through Aug. 23.

The District Attorney who convicted Trump joined forces with Mamdani — Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, who won the first criminal conviction of a US president, has partnered with the city to prosecute exploitative employers and predatory landlords for wage theft, tenant harassment, and financial scams. The city used to refer cases to the DA and wait — now, the two share evidence and can pursue criminal and civil cases at once.

The Mamdani administration sued the Council over payments for teachers’ aides — The Council passed one-time $10,000 payments for 39,000 paraprofessionals. The administration sued to block it, arguing that letting politicians bypass collective bargaining violates state labor law. Some argue this is Mamdani reneging on a pledge (see Smear of the Week below for more).

Bus, Club: the B44 becomes a night out — The city launched Bus, Club, a digital series making the case that the bus gets you to the bar almost as fast as a rideshare, for a fraction of the price. The first edition maps major nightlife venues within a block of the B44 bus route, between Williamsburg and Flatbush.

The reality: On the campaign trail, Mamdani endorsed a permanent annual $10K raise for teachers’ aides. What he’s now opposing is a one-time payment — which the city argues bypasses collective bargaining, violates state labor law, and does nothing to “solve the underlying, long-term pay inequities facing paraprofessionals”. It also doesn’t touch the staffing shortage, as a single payment helps existing workers without encouraging others to join the workforce.

What happened last week?

Mamdani and Hochul unite against the right — Governor Kathy Hochul announced $7.2M for unaccompanied migrant kids’ legal representation in NYC, after the Trump admin pulled funding. Mamdani followed with a scathing attack on Bruce Blakeman, Hochul’s opponent in this fall’s election, over his support for mass deportation.

Child care to be completely free for low-income families — The Mamdani administration will cover all weekly fees paid by 22,000 low-income families receiving subsidized child care. The result of a new $5.2 million city investment.

Tax on luxury homes is safe, for now —Mamdani’s pied-à-terre surcharge was briefly paused, and then resumed, following a lawsuit over its implementation. President Trump then threatened federal action to kill the tax, which Mamdani laughed off.

Approval soars — Mamdani’s NYC favorability is at 69%, up 11 points since June. Statewide, he’s at 47%, including 78% with Black voters and 55% with Latino voters.

Corrupted bike lane getting fixed — In 2023, Mayor Eric Adams killed a bike lane segment, leaving cyclists swerving into oncoming traffic on Brooklyn's Ashland Place. The move, prompted by pressure from a real-estate developer and Adams donor, led to dozens of crashes and nine injuries. The Mamdani administration is now finally closing the gap — because, seriously, what kind of infrastructure is this:

Other news: Leaders of the world's largest Hasidic group defended Mamdani against antisemitism accusations • Construction began on a long-stalled Bronx busway, aiming to speed up trips for 39,000 daily bus riders • The city is giving thousands of free and discounted Broadway tickets to high schoolers • The city is studying a plan to cool subway platforms and use the captured heat to warm buildings

Smear of the Week

The smear: The Wall Street Journal declares “Mamdani’s Honeymoon With New York Is Over,” citing a mayoral unfavorability rate of 44%.

The reality: That figure is statewide. In New York City — the place that actually elected Mamdani — his favorability sits at 69%. The Murdoch-owned Journal ran the statewide number as if it were the city’s, then quietly added the real figure after pushback — without acknowledging the correction.

Breaking ground on affordable homes in the Bronx — Mayor Mamdani and The Doe Fund broke ground on the Casanova Residence in Hunts Point, which will provide 96 supportive and affordable homes for formerly homeless New Yorkers. The site will have support services for people with mental illness, substance use disorders, and disabling medical conditions — part of the administration's pledge to invest $1 billion in supportive housing.

Billionaire backs down in wealth tax feud — Citadel has committed to leasing even more NYC office space than originally planned in its $6B Manhattan construction project — months after CEO Ken Griffin criticized Mayor Mamdani and hinted at scrapping the plan. Griffin's outburst came after Mamdani recorded a video highlighting his new pied-à-terre tax on luxury second homes, filmed outside Griffin's own $238M penthouse.

2,000 kids approved for new free childcare program — Mayor Mamdani’s flagship program will begin this fall, providing full-day care to two-year-olds for an entire calendar year, not just a school year. The city says it will reach 12,000 kids by 2027, and reach all 2-year-olds citywide by 2030. The announcement comes amid reports that the Trump administration is imminently planning to gut an early education program for children in poverty.

Cracks down begins on illegal e-bike retailers — The Mamdani administration sent cease-and-desist orders to 42 retailers — including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Temu and Wayfair — for selling illegal high-speed e-bikes and scooters. At least 45 New Yorkers have died since 2017 following incidents with such vehicles, including a 17-year-old in July. Amazon has since said it will work with the city on the issue.

Praise for Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed — Following the progressive candidate winning his Democratic Senate primary in Michigan, Mamdani said El-Sayed is “someone who has shone a light on the importance of public health and healthcare in our country for years”, and praised him for pledging to “[get] money out of politics, money in your pocket, [and] Medicare for all.”

Smear of the Week

The smear: "Thousands of 9/11 families" are demanding Mayor Mamdani be banned from this year's 25th-anniversary ceremony (New York Post, with similar claims amplified by CBS New York and others)

The reality: The claim traces to a Change.org petition by Giovanni Galante, whose wife died on 9/11. Pressed by journalist for a list, Galante admitted none exists. The New York Post then quietly edited its article rather than correcting the record, even as it kept publishing follow-up stories built on unverified figures.

New Lawsuit

The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) has filed a lawsuit against Dr. Koorosh Shamtoub, CEO of Canarsie Family Dentistry, alleging his practice “[takes] advantage of southeast Brooklyn’s predominately Black community, targeting the elderly, those with emergency dental needs, and New Yorkers with low incomes or on public assistance.”

The city says Shamtoub’s office frequently pressures patients into unnecessary procedures and pushes them into high-interest medical credit cards or loans, sometimes without their consent.

What happened last week?

Discount prices confirmed at city-run groceries — Mayor Mamdani shared more details on the plan for his cornerstone affordability pledge: municipal grocery stores. All fresh produce, meat, seafood, and ~20 categories of pantry staples will be sold for 30% less than the city average. Retail prices will be reviewed monthly to maintain savings level. The first store is set to open next year in Hunts Point.

$104 million now back in deliveristas’ pockets — After the apps buried the tip button (costing NYC workers half a billion dollars) the City forced tipping back onto the checkout screen in January. Result: tips have doubled, putting $104M back in workers’ pockets so far, on pace for $184M by the end of the year (~$2,287 per worker). And demand didn’t drop: orders are at a record 3.3 million a week.

New sheriff in town — Edwin Raymond, an NYPD lieutenant who sued his own department over illegal arrest quotas, was sworn in as NYC Sheriff. He replaces Anthony Miranda, fired by Mayor Mamdani in May after investigators found $100K+ in unexplained cash at Sheriff’s HQ (You may recall Miranda from Mamdani Bulletin’s Where are they now? video of the Adams administration).

New platform tracks affordable housing — The city launched the LIFT Tracker, a live map of sites slated to deliver affordable housing for New Yorkers. A useful tool for following the Mamdani administration’s progress toward its pledge of building 200,000 affordable homes over the next decade.

Smear of the Week

Holding politicians to account matters — including criticizing the Mamdani administration when it fails to deliver. This section is for when critics abandon that job and reach for deception instead.

The smear: “Mamdani shuns Jewish New Yorkers from important judicial advisory committee” (NYPost — with similar stories in the New York Times, NBC, and others)

The reality: Half of committee members are chosen by the Mayor, and half are recommended by the state's top judges and law school deans. Among the latter, only one Jewish attorney was recommended: retired Justice John Leventhal, who served on the legal team of child sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell. Mayor Mamdani said: "We thought it best to avoid any association between the committee that would be appointing judges and the Epstein world."

What happened last week?

New Yorkers to vote on five proposals for city efficiency — Mayor Mamdani’s newly-created Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE) approved five ballot proposals that New Yorkers will vote on this fall. They include measures on expanding outdoor dining permits and speeding up bike lane construction.

Mamdani–Netanyahu standoff escalates — On July 21, Mayor Mamdani described Benjamin Netanyahu as a war criminal, saying that the Zionist leader should be arrested for crimes against humanity — but that the city lacks the power to do so. Netanyahu then vowed to visit New York in September and falsely claimed that Mamdani celebrated the events of October 7. The architect of the ongoing genocide in Gaza also claimed Mamdani is “fomenting hate”.

Pied-à-terre tax notices go out — The Department of Finance began notifying property owners of the new surcharge on luxury second homes. It's a major step in Mayor Mamdani’s plan to increase taxes on the wealthy to fund city services.

Mamdani signed two new executive orders — Executive Order 18 aims to make it easier to run a small business by cutting red tape and speeding up permitting and licensing. Executive Order 19 requires city vehicles to carry tech that blocks speeding, and all city trucks to have turn alerts warning pedestrians. Fordham Road bus lanes break ground — Mayor Mamdani broke ground on offset bus lanes along Fordham Road in the Bronx. The improved infrastructure intends to speed up commutes for 130,000 daily riders. The city says similar redesigns have raised bus speeds up to 28% and cut injuries up to 30%.

Removing lead from child care centers — Mayor Mamdani and NYCHA announced a $10.2 million investment to permanently remove lead paint from dozens of daycares on NYCHA campuses. Children suffered lead poisoning at three centers in 2024 — but former mayor Eric Adams delayed citywide NYCHA daycare testing, which Mamdani completed this year.

Storage giant forced to pay exploited customers — The Mamdani administration forced Extra Space Storage - run by “dictatorial” CEO Joe Margolis - to pay $1.7M in customer restitution and penalties over deceptive pricing, vermin-infested units, and selling customers’ belongings.

Four companies forced to pay exploited workers — The city secured $2.1M in worker restitution from Walgreens, Allstar Security, Calzedonia, and Kinship Coffee for violating workers rights. The Mamdani administration has now recovered more than $10 million for workers since January.

Two major bus lane projects completed — The expanded or redesigned lanes are expected to speed up commutes for more than 150,000 daily riders across 42 routes from all five boroughs.

Shut down: Mayor Mamdani permanently closed a Rikers jail facility — The North Infirmary Command, plus large portions of two other detention centers, have been removed from Department of Correction control – the first closures of their kind in five years. The Renewable Rikers Act (2021) requires regular review of the island for closures – an obligation former mayor Adams ignored for his entire term.

Safety stats: NYC records fewest-ever shootings and murders for the first half-year — NYPD data for the first six months of 2026 showed murders down 24.7%, burglaries 15.8%, robberies 12%, and shootings down 4% compared to the same period in 2025. Mamdani credited the city’s “whole-of-government” approach, and the NYPD “for all they have done to make our city so safe.”

Passed: New York City’s $125.8B annual budget — Mayor Mamdani and Council Speaker Julie Menin agreed on a balanced $125.8 billion budget ($1.1B larger than the mayor’s May proposal) and the Council approved it. Notable investments: $137M in new funding for immigrant legal services, $125M for a new rental assistance program, $54M to expand the Fair Fares program, and $53M for NYC Kids Rise – giving every public and charter school kindergartener a $1,000 college savings account.

And other news — Mamdani delivered a Fourth of July address marking America’s 250th, speaking from City Hall alongside newly naturalized citizens. • The pied-à-terre surcharge officially took effect, increasing tax on high-value homes that are not the owner’s “primary residence.” • The city expanded outreach to protect New Yorkers from losing healthcare after federal disinvestment.
