NYC Free Childcare 2026: The Four AREAS Getting 2-K Seats This Fall
On March 3, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul announced the first four communities to receive free childcare seats for two-year-olds — providing life-changing relief for 2,000 families.
The 2-K program offers full-day care to any two-year-old, regardless of income, zip code, or immigration status. Starting September 2026, the following areas get the first seats:
Washington Heights, Inwood & Hamilton Heights (District 6)
Fordham, Riverdale, Norwood & surrounding Bronx neighborhoods (District 10)
Canarsie, Brownsville & Ocean Hill (Districts 18 & 23)
Ozone Park, Howard Beach, the Rockaways & more (District 27)
Free childcare is just the start. See everything Mayor Mamdani is doing to make NYC more affordable.
Backed by $73 million in state funding — and growing to $425 million next year — the program aims to reach every two-year-old citywide by 2030.
“Raising a child takes a village – and it takes a city government willing to step up and tackle the child care crisis head-on,” Mayor Mamdani said. “[This] is just the beginning of our work to put money back in New Yorkers’ pockets, strengthen our entire economy and help more families build their lives here.”
The four communities were chosen based on economic need, existing childcare gaps, and provider readiness. More neighborhoods will follow.
Enrollment details and participating providers will be announced in the weeks ahead.
