What actually changed this week?
Storage giant forced to pay exploited customers — The Mamdani administration forced Extra Space Storage - run by “dictatorial” CEO Joe Margolis - to pay $1.7M in customer restitution and penalties over deceptive pricing, vermin-infested units, and selling customers’ belongings.
Four companies forced to pay exploited workers — The city secured $2.1M in worker restitution from Walgreens, Allstar Security, Calzedonia, and Kinship Coffee for violating workers rights. The Mamdani administration has now recovered more than $10 million for workers since January.
Two major bus lane projects completed — The expanded or redesigned lanes are expected to speed up commutes for more than 150,000 daily riders across 42 routes from all five boroughs.
Civil service exams now free for high schoolers and first-time applicants — Former mayor Eric Adams tried to take credit for the change as it was passed by the Council during his administration — but he never actually signed it into law.
What was announced this week?
Incoming crackdown on subscription traps — Mayor Mamdani announced sweeping new consumer protections, including that businesses must let New Yorkers cancel a subscription as easily as they signed up. The regulations go into effect on October 1 — and are expected to save New Yorkers $162 million a year.

Gotham FC will move to Etihad Park in Queens from 2028 —
It will be NYC's first soccer-specific venue, building on the administration's push to make the game accessible.
