Koorosh Shamtoub: Wall of Shame
Dr. Koorosh Shamtoub is the CEO of Canarsie Family Dentistry in Brooklyn, New York City.
In July 2026, the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) filed a lawsuit against Koorosh Shamtoub, alleging Canarsie Family Dentistry “[takes] advantage of southeast Brooklyn’s predominately Black community, targeting the elderly, those with emergency dental needs, and New Yorkers with low incomes or on public assistance.”
According to the lawsuit, Shamtoub’s office advertises low-cost services while concealing additional charges, and has not submitted claims to patients' insurers despite advertising that most plans were accepted. Investigators say patients were frequently pressured into unnecessary procedures once seated in the dental chair and pushed toward high-interest medical credit cards, sometimes without their consent.
Legal Aid Society attorneys said patients living on fixed incomes were left with devastating financial, physical, and emotional harm.
In one case cited in the filing, an elderly Medicare and Medicaid recipient seeking a partial denture was told she needed all her remaining teeth extracted. She paid $1,000 out of pocket before $5,000 was charged to a credit card opened in her name, followed by a request for $10,000 more. Her dentures were improperly fitted, and treatment remains unfinished a year later.
The Mamdani administration is seeking civil penalties, a ban on the alleged conduct, and restitution for affected patients.
